Nitrogen Dioxide Supplier to Denver

This brownish, toxic, corrosive, liquefied PurityPlus® gas is actually used in a number of commercial applications, and Rocky Mountain Air Solutions makes it readily available to Denver enterprises.

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) is an atmospheric contaminant produced when fossil fuels combust in an oxygen rich environment; at high combustion temperatures, the oxygen not burned with the fuel reacts with the nitrogen from the air to form nitric oxide (NO) and, with additional oxygen and heat, is further oxidized to NO₂. Commercially, Nitrogen Dioxide is created via the oxidation of ammonia at well-moderated temperatures in a steam-rich environment.

Nitrogen Dioxide’s largest use is in rocket motors, more appropriately in its dimerized state as N₂O₄ (Nitrogen Tetroxide, NOM 4). In this form, it is reacted with hydrazine to provide propulsion. These liquefied gases offer the advantage of long-term storage in space without excessive venting from boil-off, as neither are cryogenic fluids. They are used to position motors in orbiting satellites that may require relocation over time. NO₂ is also employed as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and in select applications as a sterilizing atmosphere.

Used as a specialty gas, NO₂ is often an element in calibration gases for environmental emission and industrial hygiene scrutiny.
